The points test, in plain English

65 points gets you in the pool. Where you stand depends on the rest.

Australia's skilled visas (subclasses 189, 190 and 491) are points-tested. 65 is the minimum to be considered — but your real position depends on how your age, English, experience and education add up. The sooner you know your number, the sooner you can plan to improve it.

Age

Your biggest lever

Points are highest between 25 and 32, and start reducing after 40. Timing matters more than most people realise.

English

IELTS / PTE score

Moving from "competent" to "superior" English can add up to 20 points on its own. Often the fastest way to improve a score.

Experience

Skilled work years

Overseas and Australian skilled experience both count, on a sliding scale — once your occupation is assessed.

Education

Qualifications

A recognised degree, master's or doctorate adds points, as can study and credentials gained in Australia.

+5 / +15

State & regional

A state nomination (190) adds 5 points; a regional nomination (491) adds 15 — often what tips a borderline profile over.

More

Partner, NAATI & study

A skilled partner, a professional-year, or a credentialled community-language qualification can each add points.

Which visa fits you

Three main skilled PR pathways

We'll point you to the one that actually fits your profile — not the one that sounds best.

Subclass 189

Skilled Independent

Permanent residence without needing a state or employer to sponsor you. Purely points-based, invited through SkillSelect.

Subclass 190

Skilled Nominated

Permanent residence with nomination by an Australian state or territory — which adds 5 points to your score.

Subclass 491

Skilled Work (Regional)

A 5-year provisional visa in regional Australia, with a pathway to PR. Adds 15 points — often the opener for borderline profiles.

Good to know

Questions people ask us first

Is the points check really free?

Yes. The points check and the first consultation are free, with no obligation. We only talk about fees if and when you decide to proceed with an application.

How many points do I need for Australia PR?

65 points is the minimum to be considered for subclasses 189, 190 and 491. In practice the score that actually gets invited moves with each round, so we assess your number against the latest data and tell you honestly where you stand.

What if I'm not eligible yet?

We'll tell you plainly — and show you what would move your score, whether that's a higher English test, a state or regional nomination, or a skills assessment for your occupation. No pressure to apply before it makes sense.

Do you guarantee a visa?

No one honestly can — only the Department of Home Affairs decides. What we do is give you an accurate picture, prepare your file properly, and be straight with you at every stage.

Where are you based?
